On Sunday, January 31, la Petite France, a French bakery located at 967 Farmington Avenue, celebrated La Fete des Rois, also called the Epiphany.
The tradition in France on this day is to have a galette des rois, a seasonal cake with a prize inside. The galette dates back to the 14th century and was traditionally divided into enough portions for all the people present plus one more for the first poor person that passed by. Nowadays, the first portion is usually reserved for the youngest person in the family. A little charm (fève) is hidden in the cake and the one who finds it is crowned the king and can choose his queen for the day and vice versa.
To celebrate the occasion, La Petite France owner Alexandra Litor offered her customers slices of the puff, which had a hidden charm baked inside. According to legend, whoever finds the charm in their slice of cake will have luck all year.
Six-year-old Victoria Boustani found the charm and was declared "Queen of the Day."
