Dianne Feinstein, oldest U.S. senator, announces reelection bid

"I am running for reelection to the Senate".

Feinstein, who was the mayor of San Francisco for a decade before her Senate career, has been among the most outspoken voices on issues like gun violence and torture during her long legislative tenure.

But in a sign that Feinstein still has plenty of sway among the state's liberal power brokers, Kamala Harris, California's junior senator and a favorite among progressives, quickly and enthusiastically endorsed her bid.

Feinstein is one of eight serving members in the U.S. Senate in her 80s.

The veteran Democrat had dodged questions about whether she would seek a fifth term, leaving her party in the nation's most populous state in limbo about whether to start grooming a possible replacement. The issue of gun violence surged to the fore last week after a shooter in Las Vegas slaughtered 58 people and injured almost 500 more with high-powered semi-automatic rifles.

Chris Murphy, D-Conn., said that if Republicans were willing to pass a bill banning bump stock devices - like those used by the Las Vegas hotel sniper - he would support the legislation, even if it was not accompanied by any other restrictions of weapons purchases. Kevin de Leon, who is term-limited as the Senate president pro tempore, are also known to be angling for higher office.

"We share a common interest in this Senate race".

Feinstein's California colleague, Sen. Orrin G. Hatch (R-Utah), who has served since 1977, has still not officially stated whether he plans to run again.
