As Pruitt Abandons Climate Progress at EPA, RGGI Moves Ahead

The Environmental Protection Agency just announced plans to repeal the Clean Power Plan, Obama's signature climate rule aimed at curbing greenhouse gas emissions from power plants. It targeted power plants in 47 states (Hawaii, Alaska, and Vermont don't have power plants covered by the regulation and were exempt), aiming to cut their carbon emissions to 32% below 2005 levels by 2030.

The leaked document casts doubts on those numbers and says the EPA plans to perform updated modeling and analysis of health benefits and other impacts of the rule. "The past administration [.] was using every bit of power, every bit of authority to use the EPA to pick winners and losers and how we generate electricity in this country".

But William Evans said Thursday he could not confirm the report and had not been briefed on the matter. A total of 58, excluding Paddock, were killed and almost 500 people were injured in the shooting.

Pruitt's attempt is the latest in the Trump Administration's risky campaign of climate change denial, and is a wake-up call for state and local leaders: if you want to protect your citizens, it's time to take action yourselves because the Trump-Pruitt EPA has shown it's more interested in protecting polluters than the health of Americans.

Requirements that facilities use carbon capture technology or swap in natural gas for coal could actually come close to hitting the same goals as in Obama's Clean Power Plan - if not go even further, Schneider said. "And that's wrong", he said in remarks aired by Fox News.

Meanwhile, EPA is also expected to soon provide an update on its plans to a federal appeals court, where judges have agreed to temporarily halt legal proceedings over the Obama rule.

It's one of the most buzzed about movies of the year, yet the plot line is top secret. For them it will be like looking at very handsome paint dry.

On the campaign trail, Trump vowed to bring back coal mining jobs and dismantle Obama's environmental policy, declaring climate change a "hoax". "The EPA welcomes comment on the legal interpretation addressed in this proposed rulemaking". Utilities shelved coal projects in preparation of the rule, and coal-fired facilities were scheduled to shut down because it would be virtually impossible for them to comply with the emissions mandates and remain financially viable.

The proposal also says the EPA has yet to determine whether it will create an additional rule on the regulation of greenhouse gases.

The president announced earlier this year that he will pull the United States out of the landmark Paris climate agreement.
