Russell Westbrook Agrees To 5-Year, $205 Million Extension with Thunder

Mayor Cornett in 2016 declared August 4 "Russell Westbrook Day", after the Oklahoma City Thunder star signed a contract extension to stay with the team.

The person spoke Friday on condition of anonymity because the team had not disclosed the deal.

According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, Westbrook now has the largest total contract (six years, $233 million) in National Basketball Association history. A year after Kevin Durant ditched Westbrook and the Thunder to play in Golden State, Presti managed to trade for Paul George and Carmelo Anthony.

Russell Westbrook's re-signing announcement Friday has Oklahoma City Thunder fans giddy.

With the new deal, Oklahoma City has $138 million in guaranteed contracts for next season if both Paul George and Carmelo Anthony opt into their deals.

In the statement, the 28-year-old Westbrook said there's no other place he'd rather be than Oklahoma City. The extension officially begins in the 2018-19 National Basketball Association season, and Westbrook has an opt out after the 2021-22 season.

When you wake up tomorrow it will be Russell Westbrook Day, and thanks to the mayor of Oklahoma City, it will remain the same throughout the whole year. If he passed, he would not have been allowed to sign an extension midseason, sending him into free agency next summer.

After all, from a financial perspective, there may be no more reason for Westbrook to hold out on signing the contract extension.
