Bali evacuees surge as volcano threat grows

Almost 50,000 people have fled the Mount Agung volcano on the Indonesian tourist island of Bali, fearing an imminent eruption.

Do not spread the misleading news that Bali is not safe because Mount Agung is on the highest alert status.

Officials have ordered anyone living with 7.5 miles of the volcano to leave their homes. "I think there are some people that either don't understand, or don't believe, or are just stubborn and don't want to go", said Kenny Peavy, an American expat who fled with his family last Friday.

Mount Agung's eruption ni 1963 was one of the most powerful eruptions ever recorded and resulted in thousands killed.

The evacuees are scattered in over 500 locations across the island, taking shelter in temporary camps, sports centers and public buildings.

'Mount Agung had been erupting for three months when the government evacuated us. The increase in tremors suggests an eruption is "imminent", she said.

"I was very anxious about the situation" said Nyoman Suarta, who lives in a village just outside the danger zone. Sirens will be sounded if an eruption occurs.

But officials now said people are fleeing even farther areas.

An increasing frequency of tremors from the volcano indicates magma is continuing to move toward the surface and an eruption is possible, said National Disaster Mitigation agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho.

Warnings that Bali's volcano will erupt have sparked an exodus of people and another challenge: what to do with thousands of cows left behind by villagers.
