The famous Banaras Hindu University (BHU) witnessed a shameful incident on Saturday evening as a handful of students, including women, and a couple of journalists fell victim to lathi charge while protesting against the escalating eve-teasing incidents on university campus.
While in defense, BHU spokesperson Rajesh Singh denied the reports of lathi-charge and said, "A group of students tried to enter the V-C lodge at midnight".
The students alleged that the police lathi-charged without provocation and didn't even spare women students.

"While police had put up barricades to stop NSUI members from reaching the HRD ministry, ABVP members were allowed to protest outside the ministry", said Neeraj Mishra, the national media incharge of NSUI. They later gave a memorandum to the District Magistrate demanding action against the guilty. "Lathicharge on BHU students is condemnable". Trouble began on the night of September 21 when inmates of a girls hostel staged protests following the sexual harassment of a student near Bharat Kala Bhavan.
As per the students, the 2700 acres campus lacks the availability of CCTV surveillance, street lights seem not to work at the late hours, guards not on board and any outsider is free to get in and out.
The alleged eve-teasing incident had occurred on Thursday night after which the students started the protest. The 5 pm meeting with the girls was to be held at MMV college, while the 8 pm meeting was said to be happening at Triveni Hostel, where the incident of molestation had occurred.
Varanasi, Sep. 25 (PTI): An FIR has been registered against over 1,000 students in connection with the violence in the Banaras Hindu University here and also against policemen involved in the baton-charge on protestors. Students say that a third year female student was sexually harassed by two men on a motorcycle near Bharat Kala Bhawan when she was returning to her hostel in Triveni Complex on Thursday.
