Mini John Cooper Works GP Concept revealed

Well, that's Mini's approach with the rather angry-looking John Cooper Works GP Concept.

The interior of the Mini John Cooper Works GP Concept is equally sporty, with the presence of an aluminum hoop as well as bucket seats holding the occupants through a five-point harness.

However, we won't know just how exciting the auto promises to be until the company officially reveals it and its performance figures on September 12 when the Frankfurt motor show opens its doors to the world's motoring press.

BMW will reveal an ultra-high-performance MINI concept this month — and it looks awesome

The GP Concept is markedly wider than the current MINI hatchback, which helps it to look lower, more nimble and athletic, while prominent side skirts, a roof spoiler and emphatic front and rear aprons tick all the boxes associated with high-performance style. As per Mini, the race-inspired concept will provide driving fun in its purest form. The British marque unveiled the Mini Electric Concept, previewing the future of the iconic brand.

"If you know about MINI, you'll be aware of the brand's long and successful history in motorsport", says Adrian van Hooydonk, senior vice president BMW Group Design.

Drawing its inspiration from the 2006 Mini Cooper S Works GP and the 2012 Mini John Cooper Works GP, the new GP concept gets an aggressive, track-focused design. A big emergency cut-off button is on the dash and the vehicle uses a start/stop button. The rear seat, headliner and other trim elements are deleted in the interests of weight saving.

Some TRAPPIST-1 planets may have the right conditions for water

The flagship, all-wheel drive John Cooper Works Clubman now boasts 19-inch wheels, full leather upholstery, JCW aero package, eight speed sports automatic transmission (or six-speed manual as a no-cost option), JCW sports suspension and an upgraded stereo and infotainment system including head-up display functionality. Much use is made of lightweight materials such as carbon-fibre, with careful management of weight distribution held as key to delivering "MINI's signature go-kart feeling".

There is no official word on the John Cooper Works GP's powertrain as yet.

There's no information on the powertrain, but based on what we've seen with previous GP models, don't expect a production version to pack a lot of power.
