Uber hired Expedia (Frankfurt: A1JRLJ - news) boss Dara Khosrowshahi as its new chief executive late Tuesday, in the hopes he can steer the ride-sharing service away from the string of controversies it has faced in the past year. Ultimately, the board decided on the third candidate, Khosrowshahi. Early investor and Uber board member Benchmark Capital had sued former Uber CEO Travis Kalanick, saying that they would not have granted him the power to appoint two additional board seats if they had known about the allegations of sexism and law-breaking at the company. The short list included Jeff Immelt, the former CEO of General Electric (GE), and Meg Whitman, the head of Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE, Tech30).
His experience at Expedia also mirrors some of the challenges Uber has come up against.
A DE judge says an investor lawsuit targeting Uber Technologies' former CEO must be moved to private arbitration.
On Tuesday morning at 10am Pacific Daylight Time, Dara Khosrowshahi sat comfortably in a conference room on the 17th floor of Expedia's Bellevue, Washington headquarters, giving no indication of his plans to continue his 12-year tenure as the OTA's CEO or jump ship for the top job at Uber.

His hiring by Uber was first reported by the New York Times.
Spokespeople for Uber and Expedia didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
He inherits at Uber a high-stakes lawsuit filed by Alphabet Inc's Waymo that threatens Uber's self-driving vehicle business, a board divided by one investor's lawsuit against Kalanick, and an organization struggling to overcome allegations of sexual harassment and executive misconduct.
The judge ordered the case go to arbitration, handing a victory to Kalanick - and likely Uber - by avoiding a more public proceeding.

An emotional Travis Kalanick, who cried as staff gave him a standing ovation, described the last six months as the hardest of his life and admitted to making many mistakes before introducing Khosrowshahi to stage. The company hasn't yet publicly announced that Khosrowshahi has the job as final details are hammered out.
Kalanick, who remains on the Uber board and was involved in hiring Khosrowshahi, welcomed his replacement. Bloomberg sources told the publication that he is on the shortlist too.
This growth is primarily through expansion in Asia, where the travel tech firm is complementing organic growth with a $350 million minority investment in Southeast Asia's online travel company Traveloka.
