David Torrence, Olympic 5000m finalist, found dead at age of 31

Torrence represented Peru at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janerio.

According to police in Scottsdale, where Torrence had been training, the 31-year-old's body was discovered on Monday morning by staff at an apartment complex. In 2007, Torrence set the current Cal record for the mile, and in 2014, he set the current American indoor track record for the 1000 meter race. Local police said there were no signs of foul play, but the Maricopa County Medical Examiner's office will determine how he died. City firefighters said Torrence was pronounced dead at the scene.

Born in Japan, he was a three-time United States road mile champion, a former indoor 3,000m U.S. champion and American indoor record-holder for 1,000m.
