Andrew Warren, who works at Oxford's Somerville College, and Wyndham Lathem, teacher of microbiology at Northwestern University, were arrested separately on Friday (4 August) in California, some 3,200km away from the crime scene where 26-year-old Trenton Cornell-Duranleau was killed.
Police said that on the day of the slaying, but before the body had been discovered, Lathem and Warren drove about 80 miles northwest to Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.
Wyndham Lathem, 42, gave himself up late Friday at the Oakland federal building and Andrew Warren, 56, surrendered at about the same time to the San Francisco Police Department, according to Michael McCloud, fugitive taskforce commander with the U.S. Marshals Service. Warren has been suspended from his post as the senior treasury assistant at Somerville College, Britain's Oxford Mail reports. They will appear before an Oakland Court and be returned to Chicago where they will be interrogated by CPD homicide detectives.
It was also revealed Lathem had sent a video to friends and family apologising for his involvement in a crime that he called the "biggest mistake of my life".
Sun and only a small chance for rain
Most stay dry, but a couple of showers and thunderstorms may bubble up in peak daytime heating, mid afternoon to early evening. Skies will stay mostly cloudy to overcast and winds will remain light out of the northeast around 5 to 10 miles per hour .
Prof Lathem is a medical researcher and associate professor at Northwestern University's downtown Chicago campus.
The deputy marshal said Lathem had never been arrested before and that people in that situation usually panic and make decisions they normally wouldn't make.
Guglielmi said the victim was involved in a relationship with Lathem, but that they had "some type of falling out".
"Whatever the circumstances, we would urge him to contact the United States authorities as soon as possible, in the best interests of everyone concerned".
Trump, GOP Senators Champion Bill to Cut Legal Immigration Levels
USA authorities issue about a million permanent residence permits, also known as " green cards ", every year. But the Senate has largely ignored the measure, with no other lawmaker signing on as a co-sponsor.
Police described the men as "armed and dangerous" in the days after a Cook County judge issued arrest warrants.
The pair had been named as suspects in the attack that was so brutal the blade of the knife used in the murder had broken off, police said. Police have not released that video.
The victim was found last week stabbed to death in a River North high-rise apartment building.
"We got word within the hour that they have both been captured and are in police custody".
