The reviews for The Dark Tower are surprisingly negative

Even without having read the books, a reasonably sentient outsider can see what King is up to in his series: interweaving many different elements from the Joseph Campbell playbook into the quest saga to end all quest sagas. Jake has unusual dreams and draws prophetic pictures because he has "the shine" about him - sound familiar?

In the books, there are many subplots, but the main one focuses on Roland Deschain and his battles against the Man in Black, which is what the movie followed.

Overall, I found myself constantly in awe of the world of "The Dark Tower" and its many layers the movie teases, but constantly underwhelmed by how surface level it felt.

From there, Jake finds a portal to Midworld, where Roland resides, thanks to a not-at-all hidden portal inside a decrepit Brooklyn mansion, which emits a mid-90s modem dial up sound when activated- providing a single laugh-out-loud moment (for me, anyway).

But it's not a straightforward adaptation of a Stephen King book or book series into a movie.

Sadly, The Dark Tower film took a disastrous turn in its conception.

Various sources reportedly told the outlet that "the creative process - particularly in post-production - was plagued with problems and clashing visions". This unfortunately undercuts not only the tension we're supposed to feel in these scenes, but the inventiveness of the universe they inhabit. The film's director Nikolaj Arcel and co-writer Anders Thomas Jensen are writing the script for the series, which has Akiva Goldsman, Gregory Lessans, Ron Howard, Brian Grazer, Jeff Pinkner attached as executive producers.

With multiple decision makers constantly undermining one-another, it seems no one was able to come to a consensus on much of anything.

Instead of fleshing out backstory, mythos and true character development, the movie starts in second gear, asking the audience to fill in the blanks and not ask deeper questions.

In this area, the movie has a hard time setting itself apart; despite all the Stephen King easter eggs, at times it feels more like somebody took the Western-futuristic aesthetic of Firefly, blended it together with the sorcery and demons of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, and slapped some Stargates in for good measure. He plays the campy villain quite effectively - only in a film that never tells the viewer if you are supposed to laugh with or at him. Although Elba and McConaughey offer entertaining performances, their characters are largely two-dimensional. Deschain protects the tower from various creatures and a sorcerer known as the Man in Black. While there is one particular instance in which Roland's money shot pays off, the shootout scenes are reminiscent of Timur Bekmambetov's Wanted, but with notably less style.

Unfortunately, it seems as though my initial suspicions about The Dark Tower not working may be borne out.

Stephen King's Dark Tower series is an epic mishmash of Lord of the Rings, Spaghetti Westerns, Arthurian legend and horror which plays out across seven core tomes.
