Major League Baseball trade rumors: Cubs finalizing deal for Tigers' Justin Wilson, Alex Avila

Avila, 30, a nine-year veteran, provides the Cubs with insurance to Willson Contreras, 25, who has played in 93 of the Cubs' 104 games.

FOX's Ken Rosenthal reported Sunday, citing sources, that the defending World Series champions are close to obtaining reliever Justin Wilson from the Detroit Tigers, as well as catcher Alex Avila. The Cubs will have to make two more moves to add Wilson and Avila to their active roster before Tuesday night's series opener against Arizona.

The Cubs' package emerged as the victor among four teams that ranked as the finalists, including the Astros, Nationals and Dodgers. Wilson and Avila will help, but the team has already played better over the last two weeks than they did earlier in the season and this move just adds to their already talented team.

United States places new sanctions on Iran following rocket launch
To that end, the State Department has said the launch violated the spirit of the nuclear deal and also flouted a U.N. And last week, the US certified for a second time under Trump that Iran is in compliance.

Alex Avila, a catcher, was traded by his father, General Manager Al Avila. He is ready to hit in the major leagues, but as a corner infielder, he was stuck behind Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo in Chicago. But on the other hand, we've really protected that core of players that are in the big leagues, a deep core of super-talented players who are young and who we control for a long time.

Hoyer wasn't assuming the National League Central is a lock although the two trades accompany a 13-3 start to the second half and a 2 1/2-game lead in the division.

Wilson was the deal's true prize anyway.

Afghan police killed in USA strike
Local officials said 20 more officers are missing and that it wasn't clear if they had been kidnapped or if they had escaped. In the statement, the USA offered its condolences to the families of the security forces who were killed.

The Cubs had no room for Candalerio - some guy named Kris Bryant blocked his path - and he certainly has some offensive tools, hitting.266/.361/.507 at Triple-A Iowa at age 23 (and had even better numbers there previous year in 300 at-bats). "We will continue to evaluate our players on the field, the players we acquired, and the players in our minor-league system for the remainder of the season".

Wilson, 29, has an earned-run-average of 2.68, to go along with a record of 3-4 with 13 saves in 42 appearances this season.

He's playing shortstop right now, but as he finishes growing and filling out, Paredes's future is probably at third base. He is effective against both lefties and righties, with left-handed batters hitting.220 against him while right-handers are at.131.
