United States places new sanctions on Iran following rocket launch

The sanctions have been slapped against Shahid Karimi Industries, Shahid Rastegar Industries, Shahid Cheraghi Industries, Shahid Varamini Industries, Shahid Kalhor Industries and Amir Al MoMenin Industries - the subordinates of Shahid Hemmat Industrial Group (SHIG), an entity which the United States says is central to Irans ballistic missile programme.

"These sanctions target key entities involved in Iran's ballistic missile program, and underscore the United States' deep concerns with Iran's continued development and testing of ballistic missiles and other provocative behavior", Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin said in a statement.

To that end, the State Department has said the launch violated the spirit of the nuclear deal and also flouted a U.N. Security Council Resolution that calls on Iran not to conduct such tests. The action breaches a UN Security Council resolution due to the possibility that it could be used in ballistic missile development, according to the State Department.

The new sanctions are aimed at six offshoots of Shahid Hemmat Industrial Group, the firm in charge of Iran's ballistic missile program, and prohibit American entities from carrying out transactions with those subsidiaries.

And last week, the US certified for a second time under Trump that Iran is in compliance. The U.S. has long accused Tehran of shipping weapons to the Houthis, a Shiite group that controls part of Yemen and is being fought by a Saudi-led coalition.
