Pakistan's glorification of Kashmir's Burhan Wani is condemnable, says Centre


Burhan Wani, a commander of the Hizbul Mujahideen famous for appearing on social media in military fatigues to attract young people to join the fight against Indian forces, was martyred in southern Kashmir on July 8 previous year.

In occupied Kashmir, the joint resistance leadership has condemned curfew and other restrictions, imposed by Indian authorities across the territory on the first martyrdom anniversary of popular youth leader, Burhan Muzaffar Wani.

The adviser said the Indian security forces had killed 150 Kashmiri people and injured some 20,000 others in the recent spate of state violence.

Curfew has also been imposed in Tral town of Pulwama district, the native town of Wani, who was killed in a gunfight with security forces in Kokernag area of Anantnag district a year ago. Around 100 civilian protesters were killed and, according to hospital records, around 15,000 were wounded; several were permanently blinded by pellet guns used by Indian soldiers on Kashmiri civilians during demonstrations against Wani's death.

On Friday, police halted people's movements in his hometown of Tral, in a bid to forestall gatherings and demonstrations, witnesses said.

Restrictions have been imposed in many parts of the Valley to maintain law and order, officials said.

Authorities had imposed curfew in old city area of Srinagar and in Burhan Wani's native town Tral, while restrictions were also imposed in nearly all the district headquarters in the Valley where the paramilitary CRPF and police in full riot gear patrolled the areas. All of them have been confiscated in the past two days.

India regularly accuses Pakistan of arming and training militants and allowing them across the restive frontier in an attempt to launch attacks on Indian forces.

While the Centre has deployed more than 21,000 additional paramilitary personnel in the State in view of the situation there, the State Government has directed all internet service providers to block the social media sites from 10.00 pm on Thursday till further orders.

All shops, business establishments and petrol pumps remained closed while public transport was off the roads.

Burhan's killing, which sparked violnet unrest across the Valley, spawned a "new-age militancy" with young, educated Kashmiris joining terror outfits.
