Israel strikes targets in Syria for 2nd day

Israel on Saturday responded harshly to errant Syrian army fire that hit the Israeli side of the Golan Heights.

He also said Israel views "with utmost gravity" Iranian attempts to gain a foothold in Syria or to provide advanced weapons to Hezbollah, its Lebanese proxy.

Israel called the errant fire "unacceptable violation of Israeli sovereignty".

An Israeli aircraft carried out strikes in Syria after 10 projectiles landed in the occupied Golan Heights on Saturday, the Israeli military said. According to the Israeli military, the alleged position from which the projectiles were fired came under attack, while two army tanks belonging to the Syrian army also were bombed. Arab media reports said that at least two people were killed in the IDF strike.

The Golan Heights incident prompted Israel to file a complaint with the United Nations.

However, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson seemed to push back at the legislation Wednesday at a House hearing . The only two "no" votes on the Russian Federation bill were from Republican Senators Mike Lee and Rand Paul.

Syria descended into war in 2011, when President Bashar al-Assad deployed government troops to quash anti-government demonstrations in several areas of the country. The projectiles were spillover from the fighting near Syria's disputed border with Israel, the army said. A US-led coalition backs some of the militia groups that want to overthrow Assad, including SDF and Free Syrian Army.

"Our policy is clear: We will not tolerate any spillover or trickle whatsoever — neither mortars nor rockets, from any front", Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told his Cabinet on Sunday.

On Saturday, Israel lodged a complaint about the errant fire to the U.N. Disengagement Observer Force, a peacekeeping mission operated by worldwide troops that monitors the 1974 buffer zone between Israel and Syria.
