A Russian spy ship was spotted "loitering" 30 miles south of CT on Wednesday morning, according to Fox News. The most recent visit by a Russian spy ship was reportedly in September 2015, outside a US Navy submarine base at Kings Bay. As noted by FOX News, the surveillance ship was equipped with sensors and computers with technology to sift through communications traffic. It is also likely equipped with hydrophones to listen for underwater contacts and to record their acoustic signatures.
The ship's sighting comes just after a Trump administration official said Tuesday that Russian Federation had deployed a cruise missile in violation of a Cold War-era arms control treaty.
22News spoke to UMass Amherst American Foreign Policy professor Paul Musgrave to find out why this ship is getting so awfully close to the CT coast line.
This is the farthest north the Russian spy vessel has ever ventured, according to U.S. defense official.

Two retired U.S. Naval submarine commanders downplayed the significance of Russia's presence, saying the ship presents little threat to U.S. security.
The ship, the SSV-175 Viktor Leonov, last sailed near the United States in April 2015, an official said.
The ship that elicited Representative Zeldin's strong words toward the Russian leader's possible historical aspirations itself harks to the former Soviet Union as well.
Musgrave says this isn't a new approach of how powerful countries check up on each other.

Russia's spy ship came up yet again during the press conference.
It is named after Second World War Soviet sailor Viktor Leonov. I'm not going to tell you anything about what response I do. The trip to CT was the furthest north the ship has gone. The Viktor Leonov traveled along Virginia's coast line in 2014.
